Accra: Mr Morgan Ayawine, the General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, has called for stakeholders collaboration to urgently address labour-related concerns to forestall unnecessary industrial actions at the workplace. He stated that productivity suffers when there is no peace and harmony within the arena of labour relations.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Ayawine made the call in a statement during the Union’s regional conferences in six regions of the country. These conferences, held in the Ashanti, Bono, Western, Central, Eastern, and Volta Regions, are part of preparations towards ICU-Ghana’s 12th Quadrennial Delegate Conference scheduled for August 2025.
Addressing the Ashanti and Bono Regional Conferences, Mr Ayawine urged delegates to actively participate in all deliberations and decisions. He emphasized the importance of collectively making decisions that reflect the aims and objectives of the national Union to maintain its position as the preferred trade union organization in Ghana and the best in Africa.
Mr Ayawine highlighted that the forthcoming 12th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference presents a vital opportunity to engage with the government on socio-economic issues affecting workers. He expressed the Union leadership’s determination to ensure a harmonious worker-management relationship through selfless devotion, aiming to elevate the Union to greater heights.
He reiterated the necessity for equal partnership between the union and management, stressing that both capital and labour must merge to ensure business profitability. He noted that neither capital nor labour could independently produce and earn income, underscoring the need for collaboration.
Expressing concern over instances of misunderstanding and unfair treatment in union-management relationships, Mr Ayawine warned against actions that could harm these relationships, leading to strikes and productivity losses. He advised adherence to the dictates of the Collective Agreement and the Labour Law to ensure justified outcomes for both parties.
Mr Ayawine also touched on the government’s 24-hour economy policy, describing it as welcome news. He expressed hope that this initiative would be realized for job creation and sustainability, leading to improved income and social protection for Ghanaian workers.
