Sunyani: Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister, emphasized the necessity for the nation's health systems to evolve in order to meet the health needs of the aging population. Speaking at the 25th Public Lecture of the Ghana Medical Association, Mr. Akwaboa highlighted the importance of integrating long-term preventive and rehabilitative care for the elderly, beyond just providing curative services.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Akwaboa stressed the need for reforms in the health sector, aiming not only to improve health outcomes but also to enhance the well-being of older adults. He pointed out that the elderly should have access to quality services that reflect dignity and inclusion. Furthermore, he noted that the aged population holds significant cultural values and experiences, which can contribute to social stability through intergenerational learning.
Mr. Akwaboa advocated for substantial investments in generic genetic medicine, community-based care models, and active aging programs to ensure that the elderly live dignified and productive lives. He also urged medical professionals to contribute to aging strategies by empowering caregivers and expanding medical access, allowing the elderly to thrive in society.
The minister highlighted the government's efforts to improve health infrastructure, strengthen the healthcare workforce, and promote public health awareness, particularly for vulnerable groups, including the elderly.
Dr. Lenusia Ahlijah, a geriatrician at Tema Urban Hospital, elaborated on the demographic shift in Ghana, noting an increase in life expectancy and a decrease in fertility rates. He projected that by 2050, individuals over 60 years old will comprise 22 percent of Ghana's total population. The Ghana Demographics and Health Survey 2023 reports an average life expectancy of 64.5 years, with women living an average of 66.7 years and men 62.4 years.
Dr. Ahlijah highlighted the health risks associated with aging, such as chronic illnesses and disabilities, and recommended measures including health promotions, disease prevention, and strengthening health systems to address the needs of the aging population.
