Accra: Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) has awarded 50 fully funded scholarships to personnel of the Ghana Police Service as part of its commitment to national development through strategic partnerships. A statement issued by Accra Met copied to the Ghana News Agency said the initiative was aimed at enhancing professional development and capacity building within the Service through access to quality higher education.
According to Ghana News Agency, the scholarships cover both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with academic disciplines carefully selected to meet the evolving professional needs of the Ghana Police Service. A delegation from Accra Met, led by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Goski Alabi, formally presented the scholarship package to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at a brief ceremony held at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The statement said the IGP was joined by senior members of the Police Management Board, including Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr Ernest Kwabena Owusu, Director-General of Services, and COP Mr Michael Nketia Frimpong, Director-General of Finance. The occasion marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration between academia and national security institutions.
The statement also highlighted the presence of members from the Accra Met delegation, including Mrs Adjoa Agyekum and Mr Kweku Agyekum (Patrons), Dr Maxwell Dela Yao Gakpo, Dean and Acting Vice President; Mr. Alantee Lawrence, Multimedia Officer; Mr Abdul Nasr Awal, Digital Media Coordinator; and Mr Nathaniel Quaye, Public Relations Officer. In her remarks, Prof Alabi emphasized the university’s vision of contributing to national progress by empowering public institutions through education.
She further announced the establishment of a new annual honour: The Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno Leadership Award, which would be presented to the best graduating student in leadership during the University’s Annual Convocation. In response, IGP Yohuno expressed his gratitude to the University, describing the scholarships as a transformative opportunity, especially for officers in rural and underserved areas.
As a gesture of appreciation, he pledged 24-hour police protection for Accra Metropolitan University. The ceremony concluded with an exchange of goodwill tokens. The IGP presented a commemorative plaque to the university in recognition of the partnership.
