Takoradi: Some traders at the Jubilee Park in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region have called on the government to pay attention to their needs ahead of the rainy season. They made the call when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the market center to gather their views on the challenges they face as the rains approach.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Salomey Owusu, a pepper and onion seller, expressed that most of their goods get damaged whenever it rains, as the whole place often overflows with water after a downpour. “We do not have tents or proper stalls to keep our commodities, therefore, when it rains it becomes difficult for us to secure our items from getting destroyed by the rain,” she lamented. She appealed to the government to lay pavement bricks at the marketplace to prevent the area from becoming muddy and flooded whenever it rains.
Madam Felicia Essilfie, an egg and yam seller, echoed the same sentiment about the state of the market during rainy periods and called for immediate attention from the government. She also urged the government to hasten the completion of the Takoradi Market Circle project so they could return to their previous market space, where their businesses thrived.
Mr. Kwame Antwi-Gyan, a head potter at the market, noted that movement is a major problem for sellers, customers, and vehicles whenever it rains. He explained that many traders incur losses as their items get damaged due to a lack of storehouses and called on authorities to intervene. Others at the market complained about unsanitary conditions and expressed fears of an outbreak of waterborne diseases.
