Accra: Assistant Commissioner Theresa Potakey, the Tema Sector Commander of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has announced that Tema Port is nearing readiness for the implementation of 24-hour operations. This development is part of a broader initiative by President John Dramani Mahama to promote a 24-hour economy, aiming to boost productivity and economic growth by declaring the Tema and Takoradi ports operational around the clock.

According to Ghana News Agency, Assistant Commissioner Potakey highlighted the importance of this initiative at a Customs Joint Consultative Committee meeting in Tema, emphasizing its role in enhancing the ports’ competitiveness and maximizing their capacity to align with global best practices. She assured stakeholders of significant progress in infrastructure, technology, and human resources to ensure a smooth transition to continuous operations.

She further explained that the move would not only enhance trade but also create additional opportunities within the port ecosystem. Potakey mentioned that the board of the GRA has approved the deployment of more officers to strengthen the staff at Tema Port in anticipation of the upcoming changes. “We have the men; that’s all we need to work. Our officers are ready; they are gearing up to come, and I am ready to accept them and give them the necessary orientation,” she said, expressing confidence that other stakeholders, such as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), are also preparing for the transition.

The Sector Commander also noted that some shipping lines have committed to 24-hour operations, while acknowledging the capital-intensive needs of stakeholders like GPHA, which include adequate lighting and facilities for night shifts.
