Tarkwa: National Service persons serving at Gold Fields Ghana (GFG) Tarkwa Mine have undertaken an initiative to paint the Hooper Memorial Basic School Special Unit, aiming to create an inspiring learning environment for children with special needs.

According to Ghana News Agency, the group extended their goodwill by donating food, household supplies, and other essentials to the Angels of Hope Orphanage Home. They also provided a wheelchair to assist a young boy at the orphanage with mobility issues. Ms. Caroline Eugenia Buabeng Clement, Vice President of the NSPs at GFG, Tarkwa Mine, stated that each service person contributed GHS200 to fund this community support initiative.

The group also engaged in a radio sensitization program to educate the public on the importance of special units, caregiving, and preventive measures for challenges associated with special needs. Ms. Clement emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of the community, encouraging all National Service persons to take similar initiatives in their respective areas.

Mr. Matthew Adutum, the Unit Head in charge of the Special Unit at Hooper Memorial Basic School, expressed gratitude to the service persons for refreshing the school with a new coat of paint. He highlighted the value of inclusive learning, where children with special needs learn alongside their peers and gain mutual appreciation.

Mr. Adutum urged parents to ensure their children with special needs receive education and training, as this would enhance their acceptance in society. The Hooper Memorial Basic School Special Unit currently supports 35 students, comprising 11 girls and 24 boys, who face various challenges such as writing and speaking difficulties.
