Accra: The Misornu Safety Center has called on the newly-appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to initiate comprehensive reforms in the Ghana Police Service to address contemporary security challenges.
According to Ghana News Agency, the request was made in a statement signed by the Centre’s Founder, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rtd) David Eklu. The statement highlighted Mr. Yohonu’s appointment as a crucial step towards ensuring an effective and accountable police force, while also congratulating him on his well-earned feat.
The Centre commended President John Dramani Mahama for his bold decision to strengthen security leadership in the country. It expressed hope that the new IGP would explore appropriate police reforms and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
In its statement, the Centre emphasized the urgency of a well-structured crime prevention strategy, incorporating effective communication and public engagement. It urged the Police Administration to establish open channels for stakeholder communication and to make transparency a core operational tool.
Moreover, the Centre commended the IGP for his initial efforts in enhancing Police public relations and resuming regular communication with the media and the public at various levels of the service. It also cautioned journalists against pressuring Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) to disclose sensitive information that could jeopardize national security.
Reaffirming its support for the Police Administration, the Centre pledged to collaborate with the IGP in designing innovative solutions to position the Police Service as a proactive, problem-solving institution.
