Sunyani: Madam Fati Kine Lam, the newly appointed Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has advised the general public to refrain from building on waterways and flood-prone areas to prevent flooding.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Lam has called for collaboration between the various Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) to ensure effective disaster control, prevention, and management in the region. She highlighted the unparalleled role of the MDAs in controlling flooding, fire outbreaks, and other disasters.
In an interview in Sunyani, Madam Lam emphasized that disaster management remains a collective responsibility. She urged the MDAs to collaborate effectively and develop realistic strategies to prevent recurring fire outbreaks, flooding, and road crashes. “We must all come together and take initiatives to prevent disaster and protect lives and properties and save the public purse as well,” she stated.
Madam Lam extended her congratulations to the various Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the region for their confirmation and expressed NADMO’s expectation for them to work diligently to help prevent both natural and artificial disasters. She advocated for regular clean-up exercises and tree planting as essential measures to prevent natural disasters, urging the MDAs to conduct regular risk identification outreaches in local communities to enhance informed decision-making.
She also stressed that risk assessment preparedness is crucial in preventing man-made disasters and encouraged the MDAs to embrace this approach.
