18-Year-Old with Autism Set to Embark on 600-Kilometer Ride from Accra to Tamale

Accra: Young Phil Bertino, an 18-year-old living with autism, is gearing up for a remarkable journey as he prepares to cycle from Accra to Tamale to raise awareness about tourism and autism.



According to Ghana News Agency, Phil, who is not only a professional cyclist but also a pianist, lawn tennis player, basketball enthusiast, and professional swimmer, has previously undertaken similar rides to promote awareness about autism. These endeavors aim to showcase that there is ability within autism and to motivate others.



The Accra to Tamale Autism Awareness Ride is planned to cover 600 kilometers, with the objective of challenging stereotypes and demonstrating that autism is not a limitation. This ride will be Phil’s longest yet, aiming to promote inclusion for autistic individuals.



During his journey, Phil will visit schools to engage with students, share educational materials, and meet with local communities to foster understanding about autism. He will also distribute books and learning resources to underserved children, furthering his mission of education and awareness.



Phil’s mother, Mrs. Angel Liz Acquah Bertino, expressed her hopes for Phil to become a top Paralympic bike rider for Ghana and appealed to stakeholders for support. She highlighted Phil’s current capability of riding 255 kilometers per day.



Mrs. Acquah Bertino, who is also the Founder and CEO of Litzino Centre for Children with Special Needs, emphasized the importance of good nutrition and exercise, including massage, in nurturing children with autism and other special needs. She called on philanthropists and corporate organizations to support Phil’s dream.
