Wenchi: The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), a United Nations (UN) agency, and the Veterinary Service Department (VSD) have been commended by poultry farmers for their support to boost the nation’s poultry sector. Poultry farmers in the Wenchi Municipality expressed their gratitude, hoping that the FAO would extend its capacity training to benefit more poultry farmers nationwide.
According to Ghana News Agency, about 30 poultry farmers in Wenchi participated in a training workshop organized by the FAO through the Veterinary Services Department. The farmers reported that the training provided valuable insights into antimicrobial resistance and other related topics, leading to significant improvements since they applied the knowledge acquired.
During an interview with the GNA, the farmers expressed optimism that the government would enhance efforts to make the poultry sector more appealing. Mr. Alhassan Adama, a facilitator and spokesperson for the beneficiaries, emphasized the effectiveness of the FAO training, urging fellow farmers to apply the knowledge to ensure the safety and profitability of their poultry operations.
Mr. Sina Seidu, a host poultry farmer, noted improvements in the health of his birds and stressed the necessity of regular training for effective disease management on farms. He praised the collaboration between the poultry farmers and the Wenchi Municipal Office of the Veterinary Services Department, which has been instrumental in detecting and managing potential disease outbreaks.
Mr. Simon Gameli Kusorgbor, the Wenchi Municipal Veterinary Officer, highlighted that the FAO training educated farmers on biosecurity and best practices for disease prevention. He advised farmers to report abnormalities promptly and to maintain appropriate structures and feed for their animals. Mr. Kusorgbor also mentioned that while vaccination is beneficial, it should be administered only during potential disease outbreaks.
