Accra: Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited has donated significant quantities of medical consumables to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to aid in combating cholera and Cerebrospinal Meningitis in the country. The donation, valued at Ghc 250,000, includes 400 gallons of hand sanitizers, over 2,000 antibiotics, 300 boxes of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and tablets for fever and pain management, along with Lufart, a flagship product for malaria treatment.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Joseph Mensah, Managing Director of Tobinco Pharmaceutical Limited, emphasized that this contribution is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives aimed at supporting the health sector. Dr Mensah stated, “We are responsible citizens and once we pick signals around that there are outbreaks in the country, we move in to support. These are medications that we produce, we need to make use of these medications to be able to support the health of Ghana; the country we all love.” He further highlighted that it is the practice of the CEO, Elder Dr. Nana Amo Tobin, to give back to the public across various segments of the economy.
Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director General of GHS, accepted the donation and noted its timeliness as the sector works to prevent cholera and Cerebrospinal Meningitis outbreaks. He mentioned that the cholera situation and Cerebrospinal Meningitis were currently under control, with no reported deaths in recent weeks. However, he stressed the importance of strict hand washing practices and the use of sanitizers to prevent the spread of cholera, urging the public to maintain hygiene protocols.
Ghana’s cholera outbreak, which began in October 2024, has led to 480 confirmed infections and 43 deaths, with cases reported in Greater Accra, Central, Western, Eastern, and Ashanti regions. As of January 21, 2025, 30 individuals remain hospitalized. The GHS’s Cholera Situational Report (SITREP) recorded a total of 5,527 suspected cases in the five affected regions.
