Tarkwa: The Socfinaf D/A Basic School at Daboase in the Wassa East District of the Western Region has emerged winners of the tenth edition of the annual Western regional inter-district basic schools Independence Day quiz. This year’s competition, held in Tarkwa, forms part of Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebration, featuring 14 schools from municipalities and districts in the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the quiz was organized by the traditional leadership of the Western Region under the Heritage Month programme to promote healthy academic competition among junior high schools. The students were tested on history, core academic subjects, as well as cultural and traditional values.
The Socfinaf D/A Basic School triumphed over the 2024 defending champions, Tarkwa Goldfields School Complex, with 43 points. The Goldfields School Complex secured 42 points to place second, while Christ Leading International School from the Ellembelle District achieved third place with 41.5 points.
The winning school received two laptops, two trophies, gold medals, tablets, text and exercise books, dictionaries, student companions, plaques, a printer, and certificates. The first runner-up was awarded two laptops, dictionaries, student companions, tablets, text and exercise books, silver medals, plaques, and certificates. The third position received a laptop, bronze medals, tablets, text and exercise books, plaques, dictionaries, and student companions.
Obrempong Hima Dekyi XIV, Paramount Chief of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Area, commended the sponsors for their contributions to the event’s success. He emphasized the competition’s goal to enhance students’ knowledge in various subjects, especially history and culture. Obrempong Hima Dekyi XIV also expressed concern over the state of indiscipline among the youth due to neglect of Ghana’s cultural values.
Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II, the Paramount Chief of Gwira Traditional Area, encouraged students to focus on their studies and avoid activities that could hinder their future ambitions. Meanwhile, Mr. Abdul Razak Yakubu, Executive Secretary of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to promoting quality education and supporting initiatives that improve learning outcomes. Mr. Jeremy List, Business Development Manager at BCM Ghana, expressed gratitude to the traditional leadership for their efforts in promoting education, pledging BCM Ghana’s support for educational initiatives.
