Accra: Mr. Ebenezer Desmond Yaw Dzordzordzi, Head of the Physical Education, Health and Sports Department at Manya Krobo Senior High School in Somanya, has raised concerns over the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle in relation to chronic diseases. Addressing attendees during the National Conference of Catechists and Evangelists Union of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), Mr. Dzordzordzi highlighted the significant health risks associated with lack of physical activity.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Dzordzordzi stated, “A sedentary lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic diseases,” during the event held at Anlo Afiadenyigba in the Keta Municipality. The conference, which brought together over 200 catechists and evangelists from 16 presbyteries, focused on the theme ‘Care for Creation: The Task and Mission of the Catechist.’

Mr. Dzordzordzi identified cardiovascular diseases, such as heart diseases and stroke, type two diabetes, colon and breast cancers, obesity, depression, and anxiety as potential outcomes of a sedentary lifestyle. He emphasized the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical well-being, noting its role in weight control, mood improvement, and energy levels.

Highlighting the cognitive benefits, he remarked that regular physical activity aids in keeping mental faculties such as thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp with age. Consequently, he urged Ghanaians to engage more in physical activities, especially as they grow older.

In addition to advocating for increased physical activity, Mr. Dzordzordzi advised against the use of agro-chemicals, citing their detrimental effects on both the ecosystem and human health. He cautioned, “These chemicals contaminate our foods and waters we depend on,” and encouraged farmers to use traditional farming tools and organic manure to promote a healthier environment.
