Accra: The Western North Regional Police Command has launched a special operation targeting reckless motorcycle and tricycle riders to reduce road accidents. Led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Francis Kwame Tsidi, the operation focused on the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality and aimed to address the rise in crashes caused by irresponsible riding practices.
According to Ghana News Agency, as part of the enforcement effort, authorities arrested individuals operating unregistered tricycles, riders without licenses, and those exhibiting reckless behavior on the roads. The Command stated in a press release that the enforcement was necessary to curb the increasing number of road accidents in the region.
Following the arrests, many offenders were arraigned before the District Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Eric Baah Boateng. The accused persons admitted their guilt to the charges leveled against them. The court sentenced them to seven days of imprisonment with hard labour and imposed various fines. Offenders who failed to pay would serve 90 days in prison with hard labour, the statement added.
The operation, conducted within the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, is expected to deter stubborn riders and contribute to reducing road accidents. The Command assured the public that road safety enforcement will continue across the region.
