National Tragedy as Defence and Environment Ministers Perish in Helicopter Crash

Accra: The Government has announced the tragic deaths of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Defence Minister, and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, in a military helicopter crash at the Adansi Area in Ashanti Region.



According to Ghana News Agency, others who died in the national tragedy were Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, and Dr Samuel Sarpong, the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former Ashanti Regional Minister. The rest are Mr Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.



Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, announced the incident at a press conference in Accra. He stated, “I have the unpleasant duty, sadly, to announce a national tragedy involving the crash of a military helicopter this morning around the Adansi area in Ashanti Region.”



The Chief of Staff conveyed that President John Dramani Mahama and the Government extend their condolences to the families of those who perished, recognizing their service to the country. As a mark of respect, all flags are to fly at half-mast until further notice.



Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces, through a press release by Captain (GN) Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, stated that a Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter, which took off at 0912 hours on August 6, 2025, from Accra to Obuasi, lost contact with air traffic control.
