Accra: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Minority Leader Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has donated GHS200,000 to traders impacted by the recent fire at Kantamanto Market in Accra. The fire, which occurred on January 2, 2025, caused substantial losses for many traders in the market.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, during a visit to the site, expressed empathy for the traders who suffered losses in the fire. He emphasized the need for governmental assistance, referencing the approved budget and available contingency fund meant to aid in crisis situations. Mr. Afenyo-Markin urged the government to provide timely support to the affected individuals.
In his remarks, the Minority Leader also appealed to financial institutions that had extended loans to the traders to consider reducing interest rates. This measure, he suggested, would offer some financial relief to those striving to rebuild their livelihoods.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin characterized the GHS200,000 donation as a “modest contribution” from the Minority Caucus, intended to provide immediate support for the traders. He acknowledged the struggles faced by the traders in the aftermath of the fire and reiterated the Caucus’s commitment to supporting them during this challenging period.
The Kantamanto Market fire has posed significant challenges for many traders, leaving them in dire need of assistance as they attempt to recover their businesses. The donation by the Minority Caucus seeks to alleviate some of the hardships faced by those affected.
