Accra: Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has rejected former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s assertion that his government allegedly built 11,000 kilometers of new roads between 2017 and January 2025. Mr. Agbodza presented data contradicting the former President’s claim when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointment Committee during his vetting on Monday.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Agbodza clarified that official records indicate the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government constructed only 673 kilometers of new roads. He emphasized that the majority of the work involved re-gravelling and gravelling existing roads, totaling 6,185.90 kilometers. Mr. Agbodza stressed that maintenance activities like re-graveling and upgrading are crucial for preserving the road network but should not be equated with constructing entirely new roads.
As the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Adaklu and the current Majority Chief Whip, Mr. Agbodza reiterated his position before the Committee. He noted that at the time of the transition, the newly constructed roads amounted to 673 kilometers. The records in Parliament, he argued, clearly show that Ghana did not construct 11,000 kilometers of new roads since 2017. Instead, the focus was primarily on re-graveling and gravelling, which accounted for 6,185.90 kilometers.
