Tamale: Hajia Fati Seidu Tambro, the Executive Director of Sung Foundation, a non-government organisation (NGO), has called on the government to support smallholder women farmers, to promote food security.

According to Ghana News Agency, Hajia Tambro urged the government to reduce or subsidise farm implements and commodity costs to enable smallholder women farmers to improve upon their production to address food insecurity and reduce poverty associated with rural areas.

Hajia Tambro made the call in an interview, emphasizing the need for the government and other stakeholders to develop mechanisms to strengthen smallholder women farmers. She highlighted the importance of promoting sustainable farming practices and increasing productivity to enhance the livelihoods of these farmers.

She also advocated for training smallholder women farmers on producing their own local fertilizer to increase yields. Building the capacity of these farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, such as regenerative farming and
climate-smart techniques, is critical. Hajia Tambro appealed to agriculture experts to consider such proposals for future action.
