Accra: The Ghana News Agency (GNA) has extended warm congratulations to Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour on his re-election as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), commending his leadership and renewed mandate to steer the affairs of the Association. The Agency also congratulated all newly elected national and regional executives, whose victories reflect the confidence reposed in them by members of the Association to advance the cause of journalism in Ghana.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Dwumfour’s re-election, with more than 60 percent of the total valid votes cast, demonstrated a clear endorsement of his first-term achievements and leadership. The congratulatory message was signed by Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager of the Ghana News Agency. The GNA expressed delight at the emergence of other journalists from its fold who were elected into key positions during the June 30 GJA elections.
Mrs. Bertha Badu-Agyei, a seasoned editor at the Agency, was elected National Treasurer to succeed Mrs. Audrey Dekalu, a Senior Editor, also at the Agency, who has served two consecutive terms. Mrs. Linda Asante Agyei, also a Senior Editor at the GNA and the outgoing Vice President of the GJA, was acknowledged for her service spanning more than a decade in various leadership capacities within the Association.
At the regional level, the Agency hailed the election of two of its Bono Regional senior editorial staff – Mrs. Regina Benneh Siaw and Mr. Dennis Kwadwo Peprah – as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson respectively. In the Northern Region, Mr. Albert Futukpor was elected Secretary, while in the Upper East Region, Mr. Anthony Adongo Apubeo secured the position of Regional Secretary.
The GNA commended the GJA’s National Elections Committee, chaired by Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko, a Public Relations practitioner and journalist, for conducting a transparent and credible democratic process. The Committee also comprised Ms. Beatrice Asamani Savage, Director of Editorial at the Ghana News Agency, and Mr. Kwaku Owusu-Peprah, a Channel Manager at the Multimedia Group.
The Agency affirmed its enduring commitment to the growth and relevance of the GJA, noting that over the decades, many of its editorial staff have held leadership positions within the Association. It recalled with pride how Mr. Bright Brewu, one of its senior editors, was seconded to the GJA to serve as Director of the Ghana International Press Centre. His tenure remains the longest, and he was credited with contributing significantly to the advancement of the Association.
The GNA further underscored its institutional support to the GJA, including the provision of office space for Association activities at the regional level. It explained that GNA editorial staff are required to be members of the GJA, underscoring the Agency’s close alignment with the values and objectives of the Association.
The Agency assured the newly elected executives of its readiness to support their vision, especially the revamping of regional chapters to promote fellowship, inclusivity, and scholarship within the journalistic fraternity. The other elected national executives who will serve a three-year term are: Ms. Rebecca Ekpe – Vice President; Mr. Dominic Hlordzi – General Secretary; Mr. Mustapha Suleiman – Organising Secretary; and Mr. Zadok Kwame Gyesi – Public Affairs Officer.
The Ghana News Agency, as Ghana’s premier wire service and the oldest news agency in sub-Saharan Africa, reiterated its resolve to partner with the GJA to champion ethical, credible, and development-oriented journalism that will advance Ghana’s democratic and development aspirations.
