Sekondi: The enclave controlling fish trade within the dilapidated Sekondi market has caved in, after over 20 years of dedicated service to the traders without any major repairs or attention.

According to Ghana News Agency, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon, October 06, 2025, thankfully without any human casualty but caused damage to individual properties. Some traders expressed gratitude that the collapse happened on Monday rather than Tuesday, a typically busy business day for the market.

Traders voiced their disappointment with the prolonged neglect of the once vibrant Sekondi market by authorities. They expressed hope that the new Member of Parliament would fulfill the promise of constructing a new market. Aunty Felicia, a trader, highlighted the constant fear they live with due to the market’s poor condition. Nana Akua, another trader, urged the Assembly to take this incident as a warning to act swiftly.

With no other alternatives, traders are now selling their goods along the roadside, posing risks to themselves, buyers, and pedestrians, and contributing to increased vehicular traffic, especially on the busy Tuesday market days. City authorities have cordoned off the area and closed the north gate to ensure the safety of stakeholders in the value chain.
