Assembly Member Calls for Swift Completion of Tsetsekpo Bridge Project

Accra: Mr. Guggisberg Fiagbenu, the Assembly Member of the Adidome Central Electoral Area in the Central Tongu District, has appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to expedite work on the rehabilitation and expansion of the Tsetsekpo Bridge to restore smooth vehicular movement and enhance economic activities in the area. In an open letter to the Regional Director of the GHA in Ho, Mr. Fiagbenu said work on the bridge, which was being undertaken by the Bridge Maintenance Unit of the Authority at Kukurantumi-Koforidua, had stalled without prior notice to local authorities.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Fiagbenu noted that the project, which involves upgrading the existing single-lane bridge into a dual carriage at Bailey bridge, was designed to enhance traffic capacity and ensure long-term structural stability. ‘The delay in completing the project has become a major concern to residents and road users, as the alternative route linking Adidome to Juapong is in a deplorable state and becomes unmotorable whenever it rains,’ Mr. Fiagbenu stated.

He appealed to the Authority to urgently resume work on the bridge and, in the meantime, rehabilitate the alternative route to ease movement and sustain commercial activities within the enclave. When the Ghana News Agency visited the area, several drivers and commuters expressed frustration over the state of the road. Some commercial drivers who ply on the Adidome-Juapong route, said the condition of the alternative road had worsened, making it difficult for vehicles to pass after heavy rains.

‘Sometimes we spend hours on the road because of deep potholes and mud. The bridge work must be completed quickly to save us from these challenges,’ they lamented. Some commuters also appealed to the government to intervene, saying the situation was affecting transportation of goods and increasing travel costs. ‘We pay higher fares now because drivers complain about the bad road. It’s affecting our daily activities and businesses.’

Mr. Fiagbenu however noted that the Tsetsekpo Bridge project followed the successful reinstatement of the Aklakpa Bridge, which had earlier collapsed but was restored through coordinated efforts between local authorities and the Highway Authority. He expressed confidence that the GHA’s timely response would bring much-needed relief to commuters and residents and contribute to the overall development of the Central Tongu District.
