Accra: Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to prioritize national interest over partisan politics. He emphasized the need for the institution to rise above pettiness and focus on delivering for the people.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Bagbin made these remarks while welcoming MPs back to parliamentary business following an Easter break recess period. He clearly stated that Parliament would not tolerate unlawful or politically motivated persecution of its members, nor would it offer protection to those misusing parliamentary privileges to hinder legitimate investigations.
In his address, the Speaker warned members against misconduct, highlighting that parliamentary privilege does not provide immunity from lawful inquiry. He pointed out that the immunities granted to Parliament and its members are intended to protect the independence of the legislature, not to obstruct justice.
Mr. Bagbin urged MPs to conduct themselves with dignity and respect the rules. He emphasized the importance of committee work, noting that the strength of Parliament is directly tied to the effectiveness of its committees. He called on the members to rededicate themselves to their duties with patriotism, unity of purpose, and a collective resolve to secure the nation's interests.
