Accra: The Old Tafo Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised a civic challenge for selected Junior High Schools in the Municipality. The event was a collaboration with the Municipal Education Directorate and was part of the activities marking Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary in the Municipality.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative aimed to enhance civic knowledge among students and instill a sense of national pride by educating them about Ghana’s history, constitution, and contemporary issues. The challenge involved an intellectually stimulating competition where students were quizzed on various topics relevant to civic education.
The event also sought to promote a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities and the importance of active citizenship among young people. Rockanje Presbyterian Junior High School emerged as the winners, followed by Pankrono R/C Model Junior High School, Darul-Faizeen Islamic Junior High School, and Old Tafo M/A ‘A’ Junior High School.
The performances by all participating schools highlighted the significance of civic education in developing informed and responsible citizens. Mr. Suraka Saani, the Municipal Director of NCCE, remarked that the exercise effectively engaged students in learning about their country’s history and current affairs, while fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie among the schools.
Mr. Saani emphasized the commitment of public sector institutions like NCCE and GES to enhance civic education, empowering the youth to actively participate in shaping Ghana’s future. He highlighted the necessity of regular civic education activities and competitions, which require partnerships with private organisations for resource mobilisation. Additionally, he stressed the importance of organising workshops for stakeholders to deepen their understanding of civic issues.
