Lusaka: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has officially announced the appointment of Patson Daka, the renowned Zambian international soccer player, as a WFP Goodwill Ambassador. Daka, who plays as a striker for Leicester City FC and the Zambia national team, will leverage his influence both on and off the field to advocate for the organization’s mission to end hunger. His efforts will emphasize youth, nutrition, resilience building, and community development.

According to EMM, Daka’s journey from the local soccer fields of Zambia to international success has equipped him with a unique perspective and platform. As a Goodwill Ambassador, he is set to focus on key WFP initiatives such as school feeding, emergency response, and resilience building. In his new role, Daka aims to inspire fans and communities to unite for the cause of Zero Hunger.

Expressing his commitment, Daka stated, “I am deeply honoured to be named a Goodwill Ambassador for the World Food Programme in Zambia. Growing up here, I saw firsthand how hunger affects families and holds back potential. This role is more than a title-it’s a deep commitment to help ensure that every child in Zambia has access to the food and nutrition they need to thrive, dream, and succeed. Together, we can build a future where no one is held back by hunger.”

In the coming months, Daka will engage actively with the global community to raise awareness on nutrition and advocate for sustainable solutions to end hunger. His agenda includes visiting WFP-supported activities and participating in discussions that underscore the significance of food security on population health.

Cissy Kabasuuga, WFP Representative and Country Director in Zambia, welcomed Daka to the WFP family, stating, “Patson embodies the spirit of teamwork and perseverance. His voice will help us reach new audiences-especially young people-with the message that good nutrition is fundamental to empowering the next generation.”

The WFP collaborates with the Government of Zambia and various partners to strengthen national food systems and safety nets. Their efforts include supporting smallholder farmers, enhancing the school meals programme, providing nutrition assistance, and aiding communities in adapting to climate shocks.
