Sunyani: Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the incumbent President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), at the weekend called on members of the association to give him an additional three-year term of office. That, he added, would enable him to continue with his agenda of transforming the GJA and to achieve his vision for the association.According to Ghana News Agency, the association has set June 30, 2025, for its national and regional elections to elect new leadership to steer the affairs of the association for three years. Mr Dwumfour made the call when he interacted with the members of the Bono and Ahafo branch of the GJA at a meeting in Sunyani, saying that his leadership had made achievements and required additional terms to consolidate the gains of a more progressive association. 'It has not been easy to turn things around. However, we remain committed to sacrificing our all to transform and give the association a new identity,' he stated, saying 'our association has regained the lost respect and gl ory'.'Today, the GJA has reclaimed her rightful position as a key voice in the media industry, and thereby leading discourse on national issues and that is among the transformations we are working to consolidate,' Mr Dwumfour stated. He said significant improvement had also been made at the Ghana International Press Center, saying the association's advocacy efforts for the rights of journalists had been improved, gaining the required public attention.Mr Dwumfour recollected the instrumental advocacy role played by the leadership of the association towards the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of the late investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. He said the association had also signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Wisconsin International University College in Accra, which aimed at providing opportunities for members to advance their professional careers.Additionally, he said the GJA had facilitated the organization of more than 20 capacity-building workshops and trai ning programs, saying it did that with the United States and Spanish Embassies in Accra as well as the Electoral Commission. Mr Dwumfour said the successful organization and hosting of the Third African Media Conference in Ghana showed the excellent leadership of the association, saying plans were also advanced for the nation to host two similar events, the Federation of African Journalists, and the West African Journalist Association Conferences.'The GJA requires a leader who can boldly speak the truth and safeguard the welfare of all journalists by providing a clear direction without fear or favour,' he stated and urged the members to maintain their trust and confidence and re-elect him when they go to the polls.
