Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous Akufo-Addo's administration.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, outlined in a letter addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, that the exercise aligns with the Government's commitment to ensuring the proper use and administration of official travel documents by national and international standards. The recall aims to prevent misuse, safeguard the country's reputation, and maintain the integrity of Ghana's diplomatic engagement.
The letter directed the Ministry to undertake several steps to facilitate the recall process. These include issuing a public notice to notify all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration to return these documents to the Ministry for re-issuance, where applicable. Furthermore, it emphasized setting a deadline for compliance, specifying a reasonable timeline for all concerned individuals to comply with the recall by January 24, 2025.
Additionally, the Ministry is tasked with conducting a thorough verification process to ensure that all returned passports align with the current eligibility criteria for issuance. The statement underlined the importance of cooperation and expedient action in maintaining the credibility and efficiency of the country's passport system. It also offered assistance and clarification from the President's office if required during the execution of this crucial exercise.
