Accra: The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG), Volta Region, has issued a warning to its customers to stay alert against a rising trend of mobile money (MoMo) fraud that is targeting unsuspecting consumers.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Regional Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Eunice Tweneboah-Kodua, highlighted that ECG has been receiving an increasing number of reports about fraudsters impersonating company officials. These fraudsters are demanding payments through personal MoMo numbers under the pretext of settling electricity bills or applying for services.
Mrs. Tweneboah-Kodua made it clear that ECG does not conduct transactions through personal MoMo accounts. She reiterated that all legitimate payments should be processed only via the official ECG PowerApp, accredited ECG offices, or authorized payment points.
The PRO emphasized that no ECG staff member is authorized to use a private MoMo number to collect payments for bills, reconnections, new service applications, or meter-related services.
She advised customers to remain cautious and to report any suspicious calls, text messages, or individuals requesting payments on behalf of ECG immediately. These fraudulent activities not only exploit customers financially but also undermine public trust in ECG's operations.
Mrs. Tweneboah-Kodua urged the public to support ECG's efforts to combat fraud by spreading awareness within their communities. She advised customers to protect themselves and their neighbors by not falling prey to such tricks. For assistance, customers are encouraged to call ECG's customer care lines or visit the nearest ECG office.
