Komfueku: Mr. Percy Ahenakwa, the Assembly member for the Komfueku Electoral Area, has raised concerns about the rising number of fatalities resulting from tricycle and ‘Pragia’ accidents in the area. He emphasized that these incidents are severely impacting the youthful population and should now be considered national security issues, necessitating prompt regulatory intervention.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ahenakwa highlighted that the youth, who predominantly operate these new modes of transport, often neglect essential safety measures. He noted that the loudspeakers installed in these vehicles further impair the riders’ awareness of their surroundings, contributing to the frequency of accidents.
Mr. Ahenakwa pointed out that the desire to showcase riding skills and speed, driven by youthful exuberance, remains a significant factor behind the accidents and fatalities in both the Shama and Wassa East Districts. He urged for a collaborative approach, involving chiefs, the riders’ association, and Assembly authorities, to engage in discussions and develop lasting solutions while awaiting more stringent government regulations.
He stressed the importance of implementing local bylaws alongside national regulations to curb these preventable tragedies, stating, “We cannot sit aloof to see our youth die like that. We urgently need local bye laws and national regulations to end these unwarranted carnages.”
