Transport Minister Unveils Ambitious Plans for Urban Mobility Transformation

Accra: Mr Joseph Bukari Nape, the Minister of Transport, has announced a comprehensive initiative to transform urban mobility through the development of smart and resilient infrastructure aimed at reducing congestion, enhancing public transport, and fostering sustainable urban growth.

According to Ghana News Agency, the minister's plan focuses on massive investments across all transport modes to create opportunities for young people, women, and persons with disabilities to actively engage in the transport economy.

The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the inaugural Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair (GTLF) 2025 in Accra, with President John Dramani Mahama attending as the Guest of Honour. The three-day event, organised by the Ministry in collaboration with Digital Eye, is themed 'Resetting Transport Sector for Connectivity, Innovation and Investment', and aims to showcase innovations such as the latest vehicles, aviation technologies, and digital platforms while attracting investment to redefine Ghana's transport and logistics sectors.

Mr. Nape highlighted ongoing projects such as the expansion and modernisation of Kotoka International Airport, including the repurposing of Terminal Two and the construction of a new air traffic control tower. Additionally, the government is extending the runway at Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi to accommodate medium-sized aircraft, with advanced passenger information systems being introduced to enhance airport security.

In the maritime sector, the ongoing rehabilitation of the Tema harbour breakwater is expected to improve vessel safety and operational efficiency. The Ghana Shippers Authority is also working to reduce port business costs, and feasibility studies for coastal water transportation are set to commence.

For public transport, efforts are underway to renew the fleet of Metro Mass Transit Limited and Intercity STC Coaches Limited, with a focus on sector decarbonisation through electronic buses and the development of charging infrastructure. A review of the road safety traffic act is also in progress to promote safety and support job creation in the transport sector.

Mr. Nape also mentioned that work on the Western Rail Line has resumed, and services on the Tema-Nkpakadan Line have begun. These developments are part of strategic partnerships with the public sector to position Ghana as a transport and logistics hub in West Africa.

Togbe Afede XIV, Chairman of the event, underscored the importance of a robust transport sector for advancing trade within Ghana and across Africa, highlighting its critical role in economic development.
