Tour Operators Call for Gender Equality in Ghana’s Tourism Industry

Accra: Mrs. Alisa Osei-Asamoah, the President of the Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA), has urged stakeholders to collaborate in creating an inclusive tourism industry where women are not only contributors but also decision-makers.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Osei-Asamoah emphasized the need for clear policies, measurable goals, and firm commitments to break down barriers and foster a tourism sector where every woman can thrive. Her remarks were made in a statement released to mark International Women's Day, calling for stakeholders to commit to actionable change.

Mrs. Osei-Asamoah highlighted the importance of reflecting on the progress made towards gender equality in Ghana's tourism sector while acknowledging the challenges that remain. She noted that women have long been the backbone of the tourism industry, but their contributions have been undervalued. The current narrative is changing, and there is a need for greater representation of women at decision-making tables and in all aspects of economic empowerment.

The appointment of Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie as Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto as the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, underscores the growing influence of women in the sector. Mrs. Osei-Asamoah stressed that these leadership roles should not mark the end of the journey towards gender equality but should instead fuel further progress.

Women make up a significant portion of Ghana's tourism workforce, yet their numbers at decision-making levels are discouraging. Mrs. Osei-Asamoah called for women to have a voice in shaping the industry's policies, investments, and strategic direction. The theme for this year's International Women's Day, "Accelerate Action," demands tangible steps toward empowering women in tourism.

Challenges faced by women in the tourism industry include access to capital, wage disparities, training, and lower representation in decision-making. Mrs. Osei-Asamoah urged stakeholders to push for gender-inclusive financial policies, create funding schemes for women entrepreneurs, and provide resources for business expansion. She also called for comprehensive wage transparency policies and equitable salary structures.

Providing access to skills training, mentorship, and leadership development programs is crucial for empowering women to take on decision-making roles. Mrs. Osei-Asamoah advocated for gender-balanced representation in industry associations, government bodies, and corporate boards. She also called for safe and equitable workplaces through policies that prevent harassment and support work-life balance.
