Tema West Constituency: A Political and Socio-Economic Profile.


Tema: The Tema West Constituency, located within the Tema area, is recognized as a significant stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana. The NPP has consistently secured victory in this constituency throughout all elections in the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

According to Ghana News Agency, Tema West comprises 11 electoral areas and encompasses several communities, including Tema Communities Two, Three, Five, and others such as Sakumono Village, Sakumono Estate, Baatsona, and Lashibi. The constituency is geographically bordered by Tema East, Tema Central, Kpone-Katamanso, and Krowor. Despite hosting well-developed areas, Tema West also includes slum communities, notably the ‘Kiosk Estate.’

In terms of business, Tema West is home to a variety of industries within its light industrial zone. Notable establishments include the Coca-Cola Bottling Company and several projects under the one district, one factory initiative, such as the indomie factory. The constituency supports trade through several marke
ts, including Texpo, Community Two, and the Sakumono Fish Market. Recreational facilities are also present, with Sakumono Beach offering entertainment venues like Titanic Beach. Additionally, this year, the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex hosted the All-African Games.

Health and education are crucial sectors in Tema West. The area is renowned for its high-performing schools, comprising numerous public and private basic schools and second-cycle institutions like Tema Senior High and Lashibi Community Day School. In terms of healthcare, the constituency features several hospitals, including the Tema Polyclinic and the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH).

Politically, Tema West has been a stronghold for the NPP, with notable political figures such as former MP Mr. Abraham Ossei Aidooh and current Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund, Madam Irene Naa Torshie Addo. The NPP consistently secures over 50 percent of the votes in both presidential and parliamentary elections. The upcoming
December 7 parliamentary election presents a contest between Mr. Dennis Amfo-Sefah from the NPP and Mr. James Enu from the NDC. The current MP, Mr. Kingsley Carlos Ahenkorah, is stepping down after winning his seat with 59.52 percent in 2016 and 50.66 percent in 2020. The NDC candidate, Mr. James Enu, aims to improve upon the previous results of 47.90 percent in 2020 and 39.71 percent in 2016.

The residents of Tema West are preparing for the December 7 election, where they will choose a new parliamentary representative for the term starting in 2025. While many believe the NPP will retain control, others point to issues like poor road infrastructure as potential factors influencing voter decisions.
