Tarkwa: As part of efforts to keep the 30 electoral areas in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality clean, the Assembly, in collaboration with the Environmental Health Department, organized a clean-up exercise in Benso on Saturday.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise supported the National Sanitation Day (NSD) initiative and brought together traditional leaders, shop owners, traders, drivers, students, and Okada riders. Residents closed their shops and suspended all business activities for a short period to ensure the exercise proceeded smoothly. They weeded, swept the streets, cleared choked gutters, and gathered refuse, which was later hauled away by waste trucks.
Mr. Ebenezer Cobbinah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tarkwa-Nsuaem, who led the exercise, applauded the people of Benso for their participation and highlighted the need for more collective efforts to keep the area clean. He urged the community to make the exercise a regular practice because a single month of clean-up might not be enough to create lasting change in the municipality.
Mr. Alex Damtey, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer of Tarkwa Nsuaem, stated that the assembly plans to rotate the NSD across all thirty electoral areas within the municipality. "We have organized two clean-up exercises, and the turnout was good, but the recent one in Benso was extraordinary. We want to thank the Benso community and hope they will continue the good work," he added. Mr. Damtey suggested that the community should conduct mini clean-up exercises on Saturdays and Sundays of every month to prevent waste from accumulating and becoming a bigger problem.
Mr. Frank Justin Afful, the Assembly member of the Benso electoral area, acknowledged the efforts of colleagues from other electoral areas and the community for contributing to the success of the exercise.
