Sunyani Technical University Celebrates Graduation of Over 1,000 Students

Sunyani: The Sunyani Technical University (STU) has successfully conducted its 17th congregation, awarding certificates to 1,012 graduates for the 2023/2024 academic year.

According to Ghana News Agency, the graduates earned qualifications in Master of Technology (MTech), Higher National Diploma (HND), and Diploma programs across various fields such as Engineering, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Applied Science and Technology, Built Environment and Applied Arts, and Business and Management Studies. Among the graduates, 11 received MTech certificates, accounting for 1.10 percent, while the majority, 1,001 graduates, received HND and Diploma certificates. The event was held in Sunyani with the theme: 'Employability and Job Creation: Leveraging Technical and Entrepreneurial Skills Training.'

Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, the Vice Chancellor of STU, highlighted critical challenges affecting graduate employment in Ghana. He pointed out the disconnect between academic training and industry needs, limited job opportunities in conventional sectors, and a weak entrepreneurial culture among the youth as significant issues. He emphasized the importance of equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills for future work, advocating for technical and vocational training integrated with entrepreneurial development as effective means for enhancing employability and fostering enterprise.

Prof Adinkrah-Appiah discussed the university's adoption of the 'Education 5.0' model, a comprehensive educational framework that extends beyond theoretical learning to include research, problem-solving, innovation, and commercialization of ideas. This approach aims to prepare students not only to contribute to their communities but also to become entrepreneurs and job creators.

The Vice Chancellor also raised concerns about STU's infrastructural challenges, urging stakeholders to address issues like land encroachment behind the GETFund Hostel. He called for additional halls and hostel facilities to accommodate the growing student population and requested improvements to the university's internal road networks, including the 'Waterloo section' with asphalt overlay. He appealed to the government to complete the second phase of the GETFund Science Park Project and the construction of a 1,200-bed capacity hostel to meet student housing needs.

Bono Regional Minister Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa advocated for a shift from a predominantly certificate-based educational system to one that prioritizes practical skills development, innovation, and entrepreneurial capability. He stressed the need for young people to be equipped not only with academic credentials but also with the mindset and competencies to solve problems, create businesses, and drive progress. Mr. Akwaboa encouraged the graduates to focus on enterprise creation as they move from academic life to the professional world.

Mr. Abednego Direbo Kwabena Ertane from the Department of Business and Management emerged as the valedictorian, with other outstanding students being recognized and awarded for their exceptional academic achievements.
