Accra: The defense of maritime boundaries and the protection of national maritime assets and economy is a very important undertaking. In its quest to fulfill this constitutional and important mandate, the Ghana Navy continues to train its young talented and brightest minds to commit to such national service.

According to Ghana News Agency, one of such persons is Sub Lieutenant Bismark Kwame Oppong, a young officer of the Ghana Navy whose blend of academic excellence, professional expertise, and service-minded spirit won him the favours and admiration of all, particularly the Brittania Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, United Kingdom. His academic and professional excellence position him as one of the future torchbearers of Ghana's maritime security.

Born and nurtured in Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Sub Lt. Oppong attended the St Peter's Senior High School in Nkwatia and later enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) where he graduated with First Class honours in Geometric Engineering, equipping him not only with technical, analytical and critical thinking skills but also with a problem-solving mindset-a quality which will later set him apart from his peers.

Before getting the enviable opportunity to train and don the uniform, and offering his life to the service of mother Ghana through the Ghana Navy, Sub Lt Oppong had shown his mettle by gaining significant professional experience as a Geometric Engineer with organizations such as Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), the Ghana Highway Authority, the Lands Commission of Ghana, Asanko Gold Limited, among other institutions. His meticulous mind led him to play key roles, including bathymetric surveys, route planning and design, asset and infrastructural management, environmental and impact analysis, among many others.

His rich experience offered him first-hand knowledge in his area of expertise thus laying a firm foundation for his future in the Ghana Navy. During his days as a civilian, Sub Lt Oppong consistently demonstrated a passion for public service and civic responsibility by embarking on volunteerism with organizations such as Youth Advocate Ghana, a non-governmental organization on community development initiatives, and with the Electoral Commission of Ghana to support the country's enviable democratic process. These voluntary commitments reflect his strong sense of duty and responsibility which has now translated into his distinguished service to the nation.

Commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Ghana Navy on 17th November 2023, the young officer has served onboard many Naval Ships such as the Ghana Navy Ship, Naa Gbewaa and GNS Volta as a navigation and watch keeping officer during which he carried out his duties with tenacity and military precision. As part of a continuous training to sharpen his skills after proving himself capable and on top of his job, Sub Lt Oppong gained admission to the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, UK in January 2025 and successfully completed his Naval Cadet Course on 14th August 2025, adjudged as the best cadet in Navigation. He is also a proud Shellback who crossed to the equator in March 2024 onboard the GNA Volta.

The young commissioned officer, looking into the future with optimism, has a clear focus that goes beyond personal achievement. He seeks to acquire more knowledge in the field of marine and geospatial information systems. He aims to promote technological innovation within the Ghana Navy, contributing to its data-driven strategies for navigation, logistics, and maritime defense. Additionally, the 29-year-old officer is nurturing a goal to offer leadership and mentor emerging talents in his field of endeavour, including other soldiers within the Ghana Navy and the Armed Forces as a whole to embrace knowledge, professionalism, integrity, and patriotism.

When Sub Lt Oppong is not at work, he reads, swims, travels, and engages in fitness activities. His leisure interests do not only keep him mentally and physically alert for the task ahead but also a ground to nurture his strategic mindset and broaden his worldview. With a solid educational foundation, technical expertise, and a heart dedicated to service of mother Ghana, Sub Lt Bismark Oppong vividly represents the new look of Ghana's Navy-determination to pursue excellence, versatility, contribution to problem-solving endeavours, and patriotism at the highest level.

His humble beginnings and determination-laced journey is a reminder that the defense of a country transcends the strength at sea, air, and land to include the knowledge, discipline, innovation, and values brought to the table by the men and women in uniform and how it can shape the development of Motherland Ghana.
