Police Arrest Alleged Serial Motorbike Thief in Accra

Accra: The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a young man suspected to be a serial motorbike thief in the Accra Metropolis. Emmanuel Akampatiba is assisting the police in investigations for allegedly stealing 12 motorbikes within a week in Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, Police Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Head of Public Affairs, stated in a news brief that the police, acting on intelligence, traced a stolen motorbike to the suspect. During interrogation, Akampatiba admitted to the crime and mentioned his alleged accomplices as Israel and Fredrick Lomotey, who are currently at large.

During questioning, Akampatiba disclosed that the stolen bikes were transported to the Agbogbloshie Onion Market in Accra, where he sold them to unknown buyers named Nurudeen, Ali, and Inusah. The suspect was apprehended on June 24 after a resident of Madina reported the theft of his red Royal motorbike from his home at night.

Investigations revealed that there had been a wider network involving at least 12 motorbike thefts in areas including Madina, Adenta, Lapaz, and Teshie. Akampatiba confessed to breaking the steering locks of the motorbikes before transporting them to Agbogbloshie, where he sold them for amounts ranging from GHS2,000.00 to GHS3,000.00, depending on the year of registration.

Supt. Obeng mentioned that efforts were underway to arrest the remaining accomplices and recover more of the stolen motorbikes. She also advised the public to safeguard their personal and valuable items and to report any questionable activity to the nearest police station.
