NADMO Urges Keta Residents to Evacuate Amid Rising Sea Level Threat

Keta: The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Keta, Volta Region, has issued a warning for residents living close to the sea to evacuate to safer grounds due to the potential threat posed by high tidal waves.

According to Ghana News Agency, the warning follows studies by the Ghana Meteorological Agency predicting rising sea levels between 1.8 to 2.5 meters during the rainy season.

Mr. Wonder Setsoafia Deynu, Director of Keta NADMO, highlighted the significant threat to coastal communities from expected rising sea levels, including tidal waves, flooding, and property damage. He advised residents to secure fishing equipment and avoid fishing during dangerous sea conditions, emphasizing the importance of relocating valuables to higher ground and regularly monitoring weather updates.

Mr. Deynu called on community leaders and media to help disseminate the information to prevent loss of life and property. He emphasized the collaboration between NADMO and the public in spreading educative announcements to mitigate risks associated with high tidal waves.

Mr. Wisdom Seadey, Keta Municipal Chief Executive, stated that ongoing public education aims to help residents understand the dangers of tidal waves and the importance of evacuation. Community preparedness, he noted, is crucial in responding to disasters, and advice from NADMO and other stakeholders is vital for residents' preparation.

Observations by GNA revealed that many fisherfolk were moving their nets to safer grounds, while other residents relocated belongings. Some residents expressed fear and urged authorities to implement alternatives to mitigate tidal wave impacts and accelerate sea defense wall projects.

The Ghana Meteorological Service had earlier warned of a potential rise in sea levels above land level on June 27 and June 29, advising caution for residents and fishermen along the coast.
