Accra: The MTN Ghana Foundation has awarded scholarships to 500 students under its MTN Bright Scholarship Scheme.
According to Ghana News Agency, this year’s recipients, drawn from 45 public tertiary institutions nationwide, included 300 students and 200 teachers pursuing further studies. They were selected from a competitive pool of 3,691 applicants, with 1,200 shortlisted for interviews. Each scholarship covered tuition, accommodation, a semesterly stipend, and a laptop to support academic work and digital learning.
Madam Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, spoke during the awards ceremony in Accra, emphasizing the Foundation’s continued commitment to education. She remarked, “The Bright Scholarship reflects our relentless commitment to education. You are the garden we are cultivating today, and we expect to reap a harvest of well-prepared students ready to achieve the best in the years ahead. We are proud, not because of what we have given, but because o
f the impact it is making on individuals, families, and the country.”
Mr. Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, also commended the beneficiaries and reaffirmed MTN’s dedication to education and youth development. He stated that education is the key to transformation, unlocking opportunities, empowering innovation, and creating possibilities for individuals, communities, and entire nations. He further explained that the MTN Bright Scholarship Scheme was established to remove barriers and give brilliant students a fair chance to succeed.
Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, whose speech was read on his behalf by Dr. Emmanuel Newman, Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, praised MTN Ghana Foundation for its sustained investment in education. He noted that the Foundation’s deliberate investment, particularly its focus on empowering young people, is laudable and aligns with government policies to provide equal access to education.
The ceremony was attended by digni
taries including Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Godwin Utuka, Director of Academic Affairs at Ghana Communication Technology University, and other notable figures. Representatives from beneficiary institutions, MTN executives, staff, and family and friends of the scholarship beneficiaries were also present.
The MTN Bright Scholarship, which falls under the Education focus area of the MTN Ghana Foundation, was originally inherited from the Scancom Scholarship Scheme. Since its relaunch in 2018, it has supported an additional 720 students across the country. Encouraged by its impact, the MTN Ghana Foundation plans to scale up the initiative, aiming to award 1,500 scholarships over the next three years to both students and teachers.
