Ministry of Education to Launch Advanced STEM Program

Accra: The Ministry of Education has announced the introduction of a revamped Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education system aimed at enhancing educational quality.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Ministry emphasized the importance of STEM in the future, highlighting that the new initiative will prioritize building teachers' capacities to better expose students to STEM facilities and equipment. The announcement was made by Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the sector minister, who revealed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) had successfully completed procurement for the initiative.

During a working visit to Zebilla Senior High Technical School in the Bawku West District, Mr. Iddrisu shared that teachers in Science and Mathematics were undergoing training with ITEC Global. As the Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, he also inspected the school's infrastructure, noting its deteriorating condition.

When asked by the Headmaster, Mr. Richard Ayabilla Akumbas, about a Home Economics block, Mr. Iddrisu promised, "Next year around this time, I will be here to commission the Home Economics block on this campus," assuring efforts to include the project in GETFund's 2026 plans.

Addressing security concerns in schools within the volatile region, Mr. Iddrisu, notably without a bulletproof vest, remarked that such vests are inappropriate in an educational setting. He criticized the presence of armed forces on campus, stating it disrupts the conducive learning environment necessary for academic success.

He praised the Police Command for instructing officers to distance themselves from students, underscoring that education is key to combating poverty and conflict in Northern Ghana. Addressing 506 candidates preparing for the Integrated Science paper, he urged them to persevere despite the challenges posed by the volatile environment, acknowledging that examiners would not consider the lack of peace when assessing their performance.
