Accra: The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has voiced strong disapproval of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) concerning the arrest and bail conditions placed on Alhaji Abdul Hannan Wahab, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO).
According to Ghana News Agency, Alhaji Wahab and his wife were detained on June 25, 2025, in Accra and Tamale on charges of alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. A statement released by the Deputy Minority Leader, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, expressed outrage over the arrest's nature, labeling it as "harsh" and "humiliating."
The statement elaborated that the bail conditions imposed were excessively stringent, equating to financial punishment before any trial could occur. It highlighted the bail for Alhaji Wahab was set at GHS50 million, requiring two sureties who must justify assets equaling the bail amount. Similarly, his wife was granted a GHS30 million bail with equivalent conditions.
The Minority Caucus expressed its belief that these actions form part of a wider alleged pattern of political persecution by the current administration. The statement declared, "This is not about justice-it is persecution," and warned against using institutions as tools for political vendettas, which could undermine the nation's democracy.
The Minority is demanding an urgent reassessment of the bail conditions to ensure they are "fair, lawful, and not disguised punishment." The call to action extends to civil society, religious leaders, and the media to denounce what they perceive as an abuse of power.
Addressing EOCO's Acting Executive Director, Mr. Raymond Archer, the statement forewarned, "You may control the present, but history will judge your conduct," emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic principles over political interests.
