Akatsi south: The National Leadership of Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) has met commercial motor riders, popularly known as ‘Okada’, in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region. The visit aimed to explain the Association’s objectives and plans and to unify all riders in anticipation of the government’s plan to legalise the ‘okada’ business.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Michael Kofi Owusu, the National President and leader of the team, emphasized the importance of the engagement to unite those involved in the business, similar to driver unions. This initiative aims to provide riders with opportunities for training to improve their services. Mr. Owusu mentioned that with the Okada Riders Association, all riders would receive training for a better working experience.

Mr. Owusu also stated that the Association would act as a mouthpiece in dealings with the government, focusing on safety and other relevant issues like acquiring riding licenses. He revealed that ORAG’s leadership is touring various regions in Ghana to inform riders about the benefits of joining the association.

With over 13,000 members, ‘okada’ transportation has become a vital means of transport for many Ghanaians over the last decade. Representatives from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the Ghana Police Service were present to educate riders on adhering to required safety protocols.

During the event, membership cards were issued to participating riders within the Akatsi South Municipality. The riders expressed appreciation for ORAG’s visit, believing it would ensure their safety and address operational issues.
