Labourer Sentenced to 24 Months for Stealing Unregistered Motorbike

Accra: An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a labourer to 24 months imprisonment for stealing an unregistered Peugeot motorbike valued at GHC20,000.00 from his neighbour. Thomas Agbeko admitted to breaking the GHC1,000 lock of the warehouse, entering, and making off with the bike. The Court, presided over by Mrs. Susana Eduful, sentenced him to 24 months for causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry, and stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently. Meanwhile, his alleged accomplice, Solomon, is on the run.

According to Ghana News Agency, Police Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo stated that the complainant, Madam Betty Agyeman, a trader residing in Kanda-Accra, had imported some secondhand goods from Italy in August 2024. She engaged Agbeko and her houseboy to offload the goods into her warehouse. Agbeko was later hired to weed around the warehouse. Madam Agyeman also asked Agbeko to push an unregistered Peugeot motorbike with chassis number PJL000215J4892002 into the warehouse.

On August 10, 2025, Agbeko informed a friend, who is a witness in the case, about his plan to steal the motorbike. He asked the friend to help cut and join the wires to start the bike. However, the friend discouraged him from proceeding with the theft, warning that the police might arrest them.

Chief Inspector Teye-Okuffo revealed that on August 18, 2025, the witness heard the complainant discussing the theft of her motorbike, immediately suspecting Agbeko. He was arrested but initially denied the offence. Upon interrogation in the presence of witnesses, Agbeko confessed to breaking into the warehouse and stealing the motorbike with Solomon, who remains at large. Agbeko led the police to Agbogbloshie-zongo junction, claiming to have handed over the motorbike for sale, but refused to identify the recipient. After investigations, he was charged and arraigned for the offences.
