New york: Former Liverpool manager Jrgen Klopp has openly criticized the newly restructured Club World Cup, labeling it as the 'worst idea ever implemented in football'. The tournament, which now features 32 teams, commenced earlier this month and is set to culminate with the final at MetLife Stadium in New York on July 13.According to Ghana News Agency, Klopp, who has frequently spoken about fixture congestion in the past, reiterated his concerns in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. He argued that the Club World Cup does not allow for adequate recovery time for players involved, both physically and mentally. Klopp emphasized that the focus should remain on the game itself rather than external factors, expressing his skepticism about the motivations behind the tournament. He pointed out that while substantial financial incentives are offered, not every club benefits equally.Klopp highlighted the continuous strain on players, referencing the Copa America, the European Championship, and th e forthcoming World Cup as part of a relentless schedule. He warned of potential unprecedented injuries due to the lack of recovery time. Since leaving his role as Liverpool's manager last summer, Klopp has taken on the position of Red Bull's head of global soccer, a role he started in 2025. He stressed the need for player breaks to maintain performance levels and avoid diminishing the value of the sport.
