KKMA Joins National Cleanup Exercise in Kpone-Katamanso

Kpone-katamanso: The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has organised a cleanup exercise within the various communities in the municipality as part of the National Sanitation Day. The exercise saw participation from drivers, traders, chiefs, assembly members, and staff from the municipal assembly.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), expressed satisfaction with the turnout for the sanitation day and cleanup exercise. He attributed this to the announcements made by assembly members and community opinion leaders. Mr. Morton highlighted that the national exercise would be held every first Saturday of the month, with an additional weekly cleanup being organized by the assembly within the municipality.

During the exercise, it was observed that many traders have encroached on portions of the gutters and drains, erecting structures that contribute to severe flooding and damage during rains. Mr. Morton mentioned that the assembly had not previously enforced laws regarding pedestrian walkways, leading to this encroachment. He stated that traders have been warned to vacate these areas.

The MCE thanked the traders and community members for their participation and enthusiasm in the cleanup exercise. He assured that the assembly would provide them with necessary tools and committed to regular visits to the timber market and the Tulaku meat market to ensure cleanliness is maintained.

Mr. George Freeman, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Environmental Health Director, explained that the cleanup exercise is a directive from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, aiming to clean communities every first and last Saturday of the month. He emphasized the importance of sanitation as a collective responsibility to keep communities free from disease outbreaks.

Community appreciation was noted, especially from those around the Timber market and the Tulaku Meat market, for their active participation. Mr. Ibrahim Zakari, the Chairman of the Tulaku Youth Association, urged the assembly to provide necessary materials for maintaining cleanliness and appealed for the establishment of a proper slaughterhouse at the meat market to ensure the provision of fresh and clean meat.
