Journalists Encouraged to Comprehend Auditor General’s Report Thoroughly for Accurate Reporting

Accra: Journalists have been encouraged to develop a thorough understanding of the figures and details within the annual Auditor General's Report as a crucial step before reporting on its findings. Mr. Patrick Neequaye, the Assistant Auditor General in-Charge of Information System Audit Unit, stressed the importance of precise reporting, explaining that the report includes both financial and administrative elements that require careful interpretation.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Neequaye made these remarks during a session at a two-day media training organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition and the Audit Service, with support from the Hewlett Foundation. The training aimed to enhance the reporting skills of selected media houses from various regions in relation to the 2024 Auditor General's Report.

The event, themed 'Building Evidence for Increased Accountability in Ghana through a Multi-Stakeholder Accountability Initiative,' highlighted the need for journalists to avoid 'enbloc reporting' and instead engage in detailed analysis and verification of the report's contents. Mr. Neequaye cautioned against forming conclusions based solely on report headings, which could mislead the public, and emphasized the significance of understanding the report comprehensively.

Mr. Fredrick Lokko, the Assistant Director of Audit and Information at the Ghana Audit Service, also urged journalists to use their newfound knowledge to reshape the narrative around the Auditor General's Report. Participants of the training expressed their gratitude to the organizers and committed to sharing the insights gained with their peers to elevate future reporting standards.

The workshop sought to improve media coverage of the Auditor General's Report by highlighting key infractions, clarifying figures, and promoting accountability.
