Investigative Reporters Urged to Prioritize Personal Safety Above Reports

Kumasi: A two-day media training workshop on investigative reporting has concluded in Kumasi with an emphasis on the importance of journalists prioritizing personal safety while performing their duties. Mr. Kwetey Nartey, the Head of Investigations Department at Joy News, urged journalists to be vigilant and safety-conscious to avoid exposing themselves and their families to potential dangers and attacks.

According to Ghana News Agency, the workshop was organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) in partnership with the Ghana Audit Service (GAS) and supported by the Hewlett Foundation. It aimed to enlighten participants on the Auditor General's (AG's) Report. Journalists from the Eastern, Western North, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions attended the event, which focused on empowering them with the skills necessary to interpret and create compelling stories from the AG's Report.

The workshop, themed 'Building Evidence for Increased Accountability in Ghana through a Multi-Stakeholder Accountability,' emphasized the need for journalists to follow personal safety protocols established by their organizations. Mr. Nartey stressed that the lives of journalists and their families must be protected, urging reporters to maintain professionalism and adhere to high journalistic standards.

Mr. Frederick Lokko, Assistant Director of Audit/Information Officer at GAS, reiterated that no circumstance should compel investigative journalists to compromise their safety. He advised journalists to report any perceived danger to the police to avoid endangering their lives.

Mr. Patrick Neequaye, an Assistant Auditor General, encouraged the media to thoroughly analyze and understand the contents of the AG's Report to prevent public misinformation. He highlighted the importance of reporting on more than just the irregularities in audited accounts of state and parastatal institutions, urging the media to cover other aspects of the Report for a comprehensive understanding.

Participants expressed appreciation for the workshop organized by GACC and its partners, committing to apply the knowledge gained to improve their work.
