Illegal Miner Jailed for Unlawful Entry, Causing Damage

Tarkwa: The Tarkwa District Magistrate Court One has sentenced Prince Awuah, a 26-year-old illegal miner, to 16 months imprisonment with hard labour for unlawful entry and causing damage. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted on his plea.

According to Ghana News Agency, Prosecuting Police Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh informed the court, presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah, that the complainant, Solomon Donkor, is a farmer residing in Aboso, while Awuah resides at Ndadieso, a suburb of Aboso. The incident occurred on April 19, 2025, around 2230 hours, when the complainant, along with his family and relatives, locked their houses and went to bed.

The next day, around 0200 hours, the complainant's elder brother, a witness in the case, woke up for prayers and noticed smoke in his room. Sergeant Assan-Donkoh explained that the witness went outside and found Awuah lighting clothes on fire, attempting to spread the fire to the electricity meter box to burn the entire house.

The witness called for help, and several residents, including the complainant, assisted in apprehending Awuah. They took him to the Aboso police station, where an official complaint was filed against him. A search conducted by the police found a lighter in Awuah's possession.

During interrogation, Awuah admitted to the offence and attributed his actions to the influence of alcohol and Indian hemp.
