Accra: The Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has admonished individuals seeking to discredit the Association's upcoming elections to desist from their unpatriotic actions. In a statement issued Tuesday, in Accra, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Committee said allegations of a bloated register and opposition to proxy voting were being circulated without any evidence. It warned that such conduct risked undermining public confidence in the electoral process.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko, Chairman of the Elections Committee, emphasized that these claims have no basis in fact. He explained that proxy voting is a legitimate and widely accepted component of modern democratic electoral systems. The focus, he stated, is on ensuring the process is safeguarded against abuse, and stringent steps have been taken to achieve this.
Mr. Agbeko reaffirmed the Committee's commitment to fairness and transparency, noting that preparations for the Monday, June 30, 2025 national and regional elections were progressing steadily under the technical guidance of an advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The statement emphasized the Committee's mandate to organize, conduct, and supervise a credible, transparent, and fair election in line with best practices.
Expressing regret over deliberate attempts by certain individuals to sow doubt and frustration, Mr. Agbeko indicated that the Committee welcomed credible concerns backed by verifiable facts. However, it would not be distracted by unfounded accusations rooted in emotion or personal suspicion. Drawing from past experiences, Mr. Agbeko recalled how he had to step up as Secretary of the Elections Committee during a previous GJA election when the then-Chairman resigned abruptly just four days before the election. Despite the challenge, the election was conducted successfully, demonstrating the Committee's resilience and dedication.
He affirmed his personal resolve to remain at his post and see the current process through faithfully and professionally. As part of measures to ensure inclusivity and transparency, the Elections Committee and the EC Technical Advisor have scheduled a meeting with all candidates.
The Committee urged all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the GJA and protect the democratic culture that underpins the Association. It asked those with inquiries to contact the GJA Elections Committee via [email protected] or call +233 244 96 5882.
