Ghanaian Ministerial Delegation Witnesses Unveiling of Thomas Sankara’s Statue in Ouagadougou

Ouagadougou: Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, witnessed the unveiling of the statue of the late Burkinabe Leader, Captain Thomas Sankara, in Ouagadougou. Other members of the delegation included Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Minister for the Interior/National Security, and Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications.

According to Ghana News Agency, the rest of the Ghanaian delegation comprised Lieutenant Colonel Larry Gbevlo-Lartey (rtd), Ghana's Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Chairperson of Parliament's Security and Intelligence Committee, Naval Captain Baffour Assasie-Gyimah (rtd), former National Security Coordinator, and Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, former Minister for National Security.

The ceremony, led by Burkina Faso's current leader, Captain Ibrahim Traor©, serves as a tribute to Thomas Sankara, who was assassinated in 1987. His assassination is widely believed to have been orchestrated by Western powers due to his Pan-Africanist ideals.

The event attracted dignitaries and Pan-African enthusiasts from across Africa, underscoring Sankara's legacy as a leader and public servant. Sankara, who led Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987, renamed the country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, which means 'Land of Upright People.'

The statue is housed in the newly opened Thomas Sankara Memorial and Museum, designed by Burkinabe architect Francis K©r©. The museum symbolizes a resurgence of Sankarist ideals.
