Paga: The Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has conducted a training program for youth and women-led Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Paga, located in the Kassena-Nankana West District. The aim is to facilitate cross-border trade and enhance the capabilities of these enterprises.According to Ghana News Agency, this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to equip cross-border business owners-especially women and youth-led MSMEs-with the skills needed to leverage opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The program, titled 'Building resilience of women and youth-led MSMEs through AfCFTA for green and inclusive recovery and growth,' is designed to empower grassroots entrepreneurs, enabling them to harness the full potential of the AfCFTA.The project is aligned with several flagship programs under the National Export Development Strategy (NEDS), focusing on promoting trade for women-led businesses. The training also included participation from security services like the Ghana Immigration Services and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. It aimed at enhancing understanding of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols that govern free trade among member countries.In a speech delivered on her behalf, Osofohene Dr Afua Asabea Asare, Chief Executive Officer of GEPA, highlighted the disproportionate impact of the global pandemic and economic hardships on MSMEs, particularly those led by women and youth. Dr. Asare emphasized that challenges also present opportunities for resilience and transformation, noting that AfCFTA provides a framework for building a stronger African economy.Dr. Asare further explained that empowering women and youth entrepreneurs is crucial, as they form the backbone of the economy. The project aims to offer tailored training, digital resources, and market linkages to help MSMEs seize opportunities in the African market. She stressed the importance of sustainable business practices and access to global green markets, supported by digital platforms and financial resources, to ensure competitiveness.Mr Banda Abdallah Khalifa, Head of Services and Manufactures at GEPA, advised MSMEs to enhance the value of their raw products before exporting to maximize benefits from the African market. Mr. Gerard Ataogye, Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive, lauded the project, noting the district's economic potential and the positive impact on cross-border trade, particularly with neighboring Burkina Faso.Ms Rubamatu Majeed, a member of the Cross-Border Women Traders Association in Paga, acknowledged the challenges in cross-border trading, particularly misunderstandings with security services. She expressed optimism that the training would improve relationships and enhance trade efficiency.
