Sekondi-Takoradi: Assistant Chief Fire Officer II, David Asah Darko, the Western Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has advocated for stringent legal actions against individuals who vandalize fire service properties and attack firefighters during their duties.
According to Ghana News Agency, ACFO II Darko emphasized the necessity for law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions as a deterrent for future offenses. He made these remarks during a durbar organized by the Western Regional Fire Command to conclude this year’s International Firefighters Day (IFFD) at their headquarters in Fijai.
The event, themed ‘Appreciating our heroes, say no to firefighter assault and fire truck vandalism’, underscored the challenges faced by firefighters. ACFO II Darko described attacks on firefighters and their equipment as crimes against humanity and the community. He stated that it was imperative for the public to recognize the sacrifices made by firefighters and to desist from mob attacks on them and their equipment.
Despite these challenges, ACFO II Darko assured the public that firefighters would continue to perform their duties diligently to ensure the safety of communities. Mr. Anthony Quarshie, the Acting Western Regional Coordinating Director, praised the bravery of firefighters and urged the public to protect them from unnecessary attacks.
The International Firefighters Day, observed annually on May 4th, honors the sacrifices and services of firefighters worldwide. It includes activities such as a minute’s silence for the departed, the hoisting of flags, and the laying of coins in remembrance of fallen heroes.
